DANUBIUS UNIVERSITY SELECTS AMERICAN SCHOLAR/ADMINISTRATOR TO BE THE NEXT RECTOR: WILLIAM B. HARVEY

The Board of Trustees of Danubius University is pleased to announce that the selection of William B. Harvey to serve as the next Rector has been approved by the Romanian Ministry of Education. An internationally recognized scholar and administrator, Harvey will assume leadership of the university as it emerges from the global pandemic to expand its connections to the international community through the quality, professionalism, and involvement of its students, faculty, alumni, and friends.

With the extensive background in the American academic and non-profit sectors that he brings to Danubius, and a broad range of experiences in those settings, Harvey plans to build on and extend the reputation that the institution has already developed as a modern, dynamic, and entrepreneurial European university that is perfectly adapted to contemporary society. His previous administrative positions include appointments as the Provost/Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at Rosemont College; Vice President for Diversity and Equity at the University of Virginia (UVA); Deputy Chancellor and Dean of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and Dean of the School of Education at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCA&T). He is a highly accomplished researcher/administrator whose scholarly activities have been focused on the cultural and social factors that affect underserved populations, with particular emphasis on college and university settings. He has compiled an impressive list of publications which include books, book chapters, refereed journal articles, reports, commissioned papers, and professional and technical reviews, and at various times during his career, he held tenured full professor appointments at North Carolina State University as well as at UVA, UWM, and NCA&T. The breadth of his teaching background ranges from liberal arts colleges to research universities, and also includes experiences in Ghana and China.

A commendable record of public service includes having served as chair of the Education Advisory Committee for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), as a Visiting Associate at the Smithsonian Institution, an American Council on Education Fellow, an Institute for Education Leadership Fellow, and a Summer Research Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University.  In addition, Harvey is the founding chair of the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (NADOHE) and a past member of the boards of the American Association for Blacks in Higher Education, the National Council for Research on Women, the Yale-Howard Center on Health Disparities, the Study of New Scholars project at Harvard University, the W.E.B. Professor Steve O. Michael, PhD, Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees Danubius University, congratulates Danubius University on the involvement of Professor William Harvey in the management of this higher education institution: “I have known Dr. Harvey for several decades and consider him one of the best researchers and managers in higher education in the United States. His experience in college administration is long and extensive, and his network in higher education, especially in the United States, is extensive. He is a man of great honor and integrity whose talents will undoubtedly be relevant to take Danubius University to its next level of excellence.”

The President of the “Danubius” University, Associate Professor Andy PUȘCĂ, PhD, has been prepared for many years for this unique change in the academic environment in Romania. The successful educational strategy will be stronger having in the managerial board such a personality recognized for the numerous results registered during his career in the United States of America. It is another stage whose effects will not be long in coming, not only on the internationalization of the “Danubius” University but also on the other pillars of this higher education institution: entrepreneurship, open and online.

The President of the “Danubius” University, Associate Professor Andy PUȘCĂ, PhD stated that “This change strengthens the Project “Danubius, our University!” Such a managerial reconfiguration was needed in order to adapt to the future of globalized higher education. The arrival of William in our team can only ensure the imprint of the expertise of the American model of higher education on higher education in Romania. Through this vote, the Danubius academic community hopes that the American academic experience will provide new models for our students, whom we consider the strength of our University, will energize the motivation of our University professor, whom I described, in my first mandate as Rector, as the heart of this higher education institution, and, why not, will emphasize the credibility of the university, through the quality of our graduates.

This Romanian-American partnership in the management of “Danubius” University foreshadows the consolidation of our University's capacity to develop new study programs dedicated to international students. Therefore, it is a historical stage of Romanian higher education, a partnership that has fulfilled the entrepreneurial vision of the "Danubius" University and which has a real potential to exceed any performance index in terms of education, research and innovation”.
