Conference “Corruption and the Poverty Trap” at Danubius International University: An Academic Dialogue with Laura Codruța Kövesi

Danubius International University hosted, on 22 November 2025, the conference entitled “Corruption and the Poverty Trap”, an event of profound academic and civic significance. The participation of Laura Codruța Kövesi, European Chief Prosecutor (EPPO), conferred the meeting a remarkable level of authority through her perspective on strengthening the rule of law and on the European mechanisms designed to safeguard institutional integrity. Throughout the discussions, the central theme was examined in relation to the dynamics of contemporary society, highlighting the structural connection between corruption, institutional vulnerability, and the perpetuation of poverty.

The event brought together students, faculty members, researchers, and community stakeholders interested in legal and governance-related issues, providing a fertile space for interdisciplinary dialogue and critical reflection. The official opening of the conference was marked by addresses from the Rector & CEO of Danubius International University, Dr. Steve O. Michael, and the President of the Board of Directors, Dr. Andy Pușcă, who extended a warm welcome to the guest of honor while emphasizing the significance of her contribution to the consolidation of European justice. Subsequently, an interactive question-and-answer session between students and Laura Codruța Kövesi enabled a deeper exploration of the topics discussed, fostering a nuanced understanding of the challenges and responsibilities that define the fight against corruption within the European sphere.

International Scientific Symposium “Danubian Anthropology Days”

The International Scientific Symposium “Danubian Anthropology Days” brought together professors, researchers, and collectors. The event was designed to encourage the participation of individuals active in academic settings and research institutes, as well as those engaged in similar activities without any institutional affiliation. The symposium was held online on November 15 and was organized and hosted by the Department of Psychology and Social Work, School of Human Advancement & Life Sciences, Danubius International University.

The topics addressed by the participants were diverse, yet all focused on the study of material or immaterial culture. Several participants highlighted efforts to preserve the material heritage of rural settlements, as well as issues related to the conservation of the memory of settlements that have been entirely depopulated for several decades. Topics concerning contemporary material heritage were also discussed, including non-figurative socialist art and aspects of the Romanian aviation heritage from the post-war era.

The panel on immaterial culture was dominated by discussions on ethnic identity in the current context, and the ways in which national projects have shaped these identities over time. Additionally, there were Q&A sessions with FSVDU students, during which certain aspects presented in the talks were explored in greater depth. The event was well received by both speakers and attendees, with expressed interest in establishing a tradition within FSVDU.
