Legal and Psychological Dimensions of Protection Orders: Interdisciplinary Reflections from Judicial Practice

On May 29, 2025, the Senate Hall of Danubius International University hosted the roundtable discussion entitled “Protection Orders and the Need for Psychological Counseling for Both Victim and Offender: Controversial Issues in Judicial Practice.” The event was organized by the Faculty of Law – Public Law Student Scientific Circle “Nicolae Titulescu,” in collaboration with the Galați Court of Appeal, the “Al. I. Cuza” Professional Association of Judges Galați, and the Psiworks Association. The roundtable brought together a significant number of experts from the legal and psychological fields, including magistrates, attorneys, clinical psychologists, law enforcement representatives, and academics, in an interdisciplinary dialogue addressing current challenges in the implementation of protection orders and the psychological counseling required in cases of domestic violence.

Moderated by Associate Professor Dr. Ana Alina Ionescu Dumitrache, Judge Dragoș Iulian Beligan, and clinical psychologist Aurel Lefter, the debate highlighted systemic dysfunctions in the application of protection orders, as well as the critical importance of early psychological intervention for all parties involved. The speakers—judges, prosecutors, lawyers, police officers, and psychologists—emphasized both the divergent interpretations in judicial practice and the pressing need for cooperation between legal professionals and mental health practitioners. The role of legal and psychological education in preventing and addressing domestic violence was underscored, along with the necessity for a coherent and effective legislative framework to support victims. The event thus served as a platform for both academic reflection and practical insight, drawing on multidisciplinary expertise in the service of social justice.
